Little Red School
The Little Red School is located five miles north of Manchester. The original school was built in 1857 about 330 yards north of its present location. Due to continual flooding of a nearby creek, the school was moved to its current location in 1871. A new school was built in 1872 at a cost of $350. This building burned to the ground in 1904. A woodshed was used for schooling until 1915 when the present school was built for $750, plus $150 for the furnishings.

In 1959, Delaware Township School District ceased to exist. School Directors transferred the school to the Conservation Board and asked them to preserve it as a historic site.

The school exists today as it did in 1959, which was the last year of operations. The desks, books & bookcases, hanging maps and teachers desk are all original furnishings. There are also school records stored in the building that date back to the early 1900’s.

Today, the school sits on a well-kept lawn surrounded by beds of wild lilies and heirloom roses. The roses are believed to be Gallica rose known to date back to the 1800’s. Original swings and teeter-totters are kept painted and usable. A picnic table is always available and more can be obtained if needed.

The school has an open house sponsored by Lend-A-Hand Club the last Sunday of June, July and August. Private tours are available by calling conservation at 563-927-3410, or call Lend-A-Hand members at 563-927-2247.
